Vietnam!

Saigon Hotel Chronicles: Chapter 3, Morning Cu Chi.

IMG_0230.JPG
It's not often that one travels to developing countries and says, Let's Go Clubbing. But some people do including my pal Powers. We were out the night before until 4 something AM, and had to wake up for breakfast and our tour to Cu Chi at 6:30 AM. By some standards this would not even suffice as a proper nap. But Cora and I got ready within minutes, showered and even had some time to throw some make up on. We could not assume that the boys were responsible enough to set their own alarm, and sure enough they didn't.

IMG_0228.JPG
We had a super simple yet incredibly delicious breakfast at the mini hotel, and then ran to meet our tour group where we waited and waited and waited for the bus.

IMG_0235.JPG
So the boys played with the latest eyewear street fashions.

IMG_0236.JPG

IMG_0234.JPG
And I took pictures of little kids in their car seat.

IMG_0238.JPG
An average Vietnamese street, with a the Hong Kong pizza tradition Pepperoni's restaurant.

IMG_0240.JPG
One of the most immediate differences between HK and Vietnam is Hongkies are always on the go and Vietnamese can hang out anywhere.

IMG_0242.JPG
Just don't get hit by one of the 6 million scooters in Saigon.

Then we headed to Cu Chi. It's about an hour and a half away from Saigon. Usually tours end with the souvenier stop, but ours began with one.

IMG_0249.JPG
I'm not sure what handicapped handicrafts are. They are not made by handicapped folk as far as I could tell. Maybe they are calling the customers special?

IMG_0245.JPG
This is how humid it was inside. I couldn't even keep my lens fog free long enough to snap a pic.

IMG_0319.JPG
And then, we arrived at Cu Chi.

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of underground tunnels that are part of a much larger network of tunnels that span much of Vietnam.

IMG_0318.JPG

Backtracking a little, I was feeling very nostalgic before leaving for Vietnam, even if this particular era was before my time. I think a curiosity for the past, especially it's most painful moments, are deeply embedded in me. I wanted to walk the same roads my friends' fathers did when they were deployed here. I wanted to experience the lost memories, the lost lives. I wanted to feel a connection since my most beloved is deployed and I don't really understand what he's going through.

As usual, so many questions. It was really cool to experience it first hand. But also interesting and alarming to learn about the war through the Vietnamese perspective.

Our first stop, a wee tunnel just big enough for one person to fit in.

IMG_0257.JPG
This is not where they film Lost. I asked.

IMG_0266.JPG
Next stop, torture traps for the American enemy.

IMG_0278.JPG

IMG_0277.JPG

IMG_0275.JPG
An American tank.

IMG_0306.JPG
And more tunnels. This one was terrifying because it was pitch black and you couldn't tell how far you had to crawl before the end of the line. It has also been widened to fit Western tourists.

IMG_0314.JPG
Don't tell anyone but my legs were terribly sore for days after crawling in there.

IMG_0269.JPG
A trench.

IMG_0299.JPG
A crater.

IMG_0311.JPG
Our re-enactment.

IMG_0284.JPG
And the real deal!

IMG_0285.JPG
The girls grabbed the AK 47s

IMG_0288.JPG

IMG_0297.JPG

IMG_0286.JPG
And the boys fired M1s.

They did not offer us ear protection but we took it without asking. Unfortunately they were just regular music headsets! It was really F'ing loud and we had to run outta there quick.

It's actually pretty cool that they have the firing range right there because as you're walking through the grounds you hear the gunshots closeby and it's totally eerie.

Things to do before I die:
Crawl through Viet Cong guerrilla tunnels. Check.
Fire an AK 47 in Vietnam. Check.

Vietnam!

Saigon Hotel Chronicles: Chapter 2, Death Threats and the Apocalypse on our First Night in Ho Chi Minh City.

IMG_0219.JPG

We landed in Ho Chi Mihn City (still called Saigon by the locals) around 10:30 pm last Friday and waited an eternity for Phil to get his landing visa. Don't go that route. We spent some time negotiating our taxi fare and once we got it down to $8 USD, or maybe $128,000 Dong, we made our way to the Saigon Mini Hotel. This place, hostel, mini hotel, boutique hotel, whatever you want to call it was actually great and only $14 USD a night! God I love Vietnam.

IMG_0216.JPG
Since it was already pretty late, we freshened up and got to the clubs. Picked up Powers and Kiki at their hotel on the way. We threw down at this place called Apocalypse Now. If you think I'm kidding... they also have a place called Heart of Darkness for anyone who wants the true Joseph Conrad experience!

IMG_0218.JPG
After some tequila shots and a lot of dancing on a super crowded hot and humid dance floor, we decided we needed some Pho.

IMG_0221.JPG
We hopped in a taxi and as soon as the car doors swung open at our destination, we were bombarded by little girls hawking flowers. The boys politely tried to turn them down, and Phil even said he was allergic, and then the little girls started screaming, "LIARS!" Oh it got worse. They started hitting, pulling, and then they started shouting out, " I will kill you!" I wish I had it on video!

The death threats continued and even though they wanted us dead, they told us to be careful as cars were coming down the street.

IMG_0222.JPG
We finally settled on a sidewalk cafe for Pho and Cora gave the chicken feet a whirl.

We walked back to the hotel and by this time it was 4 something in the AM. No problem right? We only had to be ready for breakfast at 6:30.

Next, our day of Cu Chi!

Memorial Day Weekend in Vietnam!

Saigon Hotel Chronicles: Chapter One, Meet the Bunsholes.

IMG_0211.JPG

Two weeks ago I got an email from Powers. He was going to be in Vietnam for work and invite a handful of us to join him for a rock star weekend. I said, yes please.

My pals Cora, Daven, and Phil wanted to go too. So we booked our flights and spent the week sending each other awful/hilarious messages in an email chain that I may one day turn into a play called Saigon Hotel.

IMG_0204.JPG
Friday after work, we booked it to the Hongkie airport where we shoved fast food in our faces. It's the only place in Hong Kong to get Popeyes!

IMG_0207.JPG
Also had at the airport... the first sunset I've seen here. That's right, almost 6 months in Hongkie town with no sunsets! Although our plane was boarding, we figured we had enough time for at least one cocktail and a shot.

IMG_0212.JPG
The super friendly dude checking us in informed us that we had been profiled as English speakers and were therefore sitting by the emergency exits. It was there that me and Daven witnessed some strange things, like a guy with a Jesus Freak shirt on, an Aussie redneck with a flat top mullet, and a super fierce male flight attendant who said something about about spraying his johnson... huh?

Up next, my debut in 'Nam. Hope you had a fabulous Memorial Day Weekend.

One Night Only

IMG_0019.JPG
Since it was a quick trip home, I was left with one night only to throw down with my peeps.

For as quick as it was, and working during the bulk of it, I think I was pretty successful with my rounds. Some time with the parents, some time with Pepper's parents. Some time with Sophie, and a wee bit of time with Cougar. A night with my ol school girls Sarah and Erin. A night with my former favorite workmates. A strange night in the Valley with my Life Partner. A lazy afternoon in Redondo with the crew, and we topped it off with ONE NIGHT ONLY.

The picture above is at Frost's. Manolo, his betta fish since our humble beginnings in Silver Lake had passed away the day I arrived in LA. He is now cryonically frozen in an Ed Hardy water bottle where we will keep him until we can bring him back to life.

IMG_0018.JPG
Yep, that's good ol Manolo keeping the Jager company.

Home to the Valley

IMG_0012.JPG
This is home. Her name is Sophie and I loves her so much.

The trip home went by super fast. It's so hard to manage family, friends, and also workin hard for the money during the week but somehow I squeezed just enough of the good stuff in.

Immediately after stepping off the plane, Marie and I headed towards the water with a pit stop at Anthropologie and Jamba Juice.

Redondo
We crashed my sister's place cause that's just what you do when your sis lives right on the water. We gabbed by the pool and it was like time I had never been away.

Oh sweet In and Out
There was tons of crap to be eaten. Lots of Mexican, not nearly enough In and Out but at least I got one in.

A weinerschnitzel hot mess
And there was also all the crap I ate with my dad at lunch. It started off with the Sizzler, then some dodgy place for falafal, no Taco Bell but somehow we ended up at Weinerschnitzel.

Cuban!
There was good food too. I had a lovely dinner with Bonaduce, Cam and Kelly.

And now I'm starving thinking about all that wonderful and terrible food but have to settle for some crap lunch in Lai Chi KOK.
