Cambria: Pines by the Sea

A couple of weekends ago I accompanied the bride-to-be to the wedding location. For those of you who have never been to or heard of Cambria, it is a lovely little beach town in between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I used to go there on weekend family trips to visit Hearst Castle and the art galleries. My parents are big on beach towns with art galleries.

I also took Brian here the weekend before he left for bootcamp. It's quiet, we could relax and enjoy each other, and begin our lives and wine lovers. In the many years I have been visiting Cambria it has not changed much. The Main Street Grill is now enclosed. My favorite gallery What is Art is no longer there. Other than that it remains untouched and I love it.

Example
That weekend, the drive up was beautiful. This is somewhere in between Santa Barbara and SLO.

Example
We reached San Luis Obispo in good time so we walked around. Unlike Cambria it has had some major developments and is now somewhat reminiscent of Old Town Pasasdena. There was once a time when Brian and I struggled to find a Starbucks. During our walk, we came across a restaurant with an entryway modeled after a modern French metro stop. It was so cute that we had to lunch there.

Marie and I shared a meatloaf sandwich, brie crustini salad, and a carafe of wine. It was wonderful and totally civilized.

Example
After lunch, it was time for Marie's hair trial. Marie envisioned something simple and romantic such as a french twist, but upon meeting Marie, the hairdresser decided she was much too interesting for a french twist and went with something more dynamic.

Example
As you can see, the fate of Marie's wedding locks were in this bubble gum chewing stylist's hands. At this point, it could go very wrong or very right.

Example
It turns out that the hair, just like everything else has been turning out for this occasion, came out perfectly!

Example
Romantic and regal, soft and beautiful.

So, after the hair trial and an attempt to make some nail appointments at the Blade Runner Salon, we set on to Cambria. We got there in no time, dropped our bags, and headed to the cake tasting!

Example
The cakes were fantastic. Marie chose the olallieberry, which is a hybrid of blackberry and raspberry and specific to central coast.

Example
This is how we felt after eating the cake.

When we were through, Marie had a brilliant idea for the cake table, so we hit an antique shop to see what we could find.

Example
It wasn't really what we were in the market for, and of course Marie makes this find after she scorns vintage clothing shopping. But it was an amazing coat and cheaper than a mani and pedi at Blade Runner!

Example
In pristine condition, this coat was from the 1960s and features a scalloped fur trim and no bad odors! We were in shock and awe of the find the whole weekend.

After making our way through the maze of the store (it was a million times bigger than it appeared, and we could not find a way out. Kinda like Vegas hotels) we hit the road and went back to the Oley house to do the make up trial.

Immersed in a sea of make up. What wine goes best with this eyeshadow?

She's beautiful!

Welcome to the Brambles, a pleasant place to dine.

This is where the reception is to take place. We soaked in the warmth of the fireplace and indulged in a greek fried cheese appetizer and a bottle of wine. I also had the chicken veronique, and those of you who ordered the chicken will be very happy with your choice.

DAY TWO
Example
We woke up and watched a little Spongebob in bed. We packed it up and said good-bye to the Oley house.

Example
We shared breakfast at Lynn's, a scrumptious eggs benedict and cheese blintzes, and began to walk off our breakfast. We walked up the hill to the chapel.

We strolled into the little town.

And then we walked up another hill to see the hotel. During the storm over New Years several trees were knocked down.

Here's where we'll be staying.

Someday my deck will look like this.

We also scouted some photo locations.

We started heading back home and the clouds were crazy.

Example
As we approached Solvang we realized we needed caffeine and a snack. Brian loves this row of trees.

We only stopped in Solvang long enough to pick up a sandwich and soda, use the bathroom, check out a shop, and we were back on the road.

Example
The Hitching Post, of Sideways fame. Did I ever tell you I love Paul Giamatti?

Example
The sandwiches were so good! I'm still thinking about them today. We made it back in one piece and we rest up until our next adventure.
